The coaching search for Tennessee did not go anywhere close to the way they had hoped. First, their were rumors flying around the Vol Nation that it was a lock that John Gruden would be their next head coach and they would quickly return to supremacy. After several other big name candidates fell by the wayside the Vols made a big offer to Charlie Strong. Strong turned down the Vols to remain at Louisville which led to Tennessee going with a name that initially toward the bottom of their list - Butch Jones.
I am not saying that Butch Jones is a bad coach and won't have some success at Tennessee but a majority of Vol fans seem upset by this hire and the unwillingness of a big name to come to Knoxville. Now it appears that former UGA linebackers coach John Jancek (who was Jones DC at Cincy) will be the DC at Tennessee. Also, Willie Martinez will most likely be named the secondary coach in Knoxville. That is music to Dawg fans ears because recently wherever Martinez goes a horrible pass defense is not to far behind.
Vol fans are quite uneasy about this staff and quite frankly many of them are melting down. The most positive thing I think have read on a Tennessee forum is - "Well it can't get any worse then Derek Dooley".
It truly is amazing how far the Vols have fallen since they made the rash decision to fire Fulmer and bring in Kiffin. I am sure their are a lot of Vol fans out there that are still wishing that they never would have fired Fulmer. Now all they can do is hope and pray that Butch Jones can exceed their expectations by a long shot.
